John James graduated from Sydney University in 1911 and served in Gallipoli, France and Egypt during the First World War. He was Lt Colonel in charge of the Fourth Field Ambulance and was mentioned in dispatches. He was the first Medical Superintendent of the Canberra Hospital, and from 1929 to 1965 practised as a surgeon and general practitioner in Canberra. In 2002, the hospital purchased the business of Lidia Perin Memorial Hospital day surgery. In 2005, the hospital undertook a major project and built the Clinical Services Building. From 16 of October 2006 John James Memorial Hospital was purchased by Little Company of Mary (LCM) and became Calvary John James Hospital. Although its name has changed the excellence service still the drive of the hospital along with values of hospitality, healing, stewardship and respect. Lidia Perin Memorial HospitalLidia Perin Memorial Hospital is dedicated to the memory of Lidia Perin, who was tragically killed in a car accident on 28 November 1984. Since her death her husband, Leo, sought a lasting monument to Lidia. The establishment of a hospital was in keeping with Lidia's gentle nature, as she was always concerned about people needing help, and often found time to help and comfort others. Lidia Perin Memorial Hospital commenced operation in 1991, and was initially located in Wanniassa. The hospital was run by a conglomerate which included members of the Perin family. The Perin's bought out the other members in 1995, and relocated the hospital to Deakin. The hospital was purpose-built as a day surgery, and the Perin family sold the business to JJMH in September 2002. The Hospital TodayCalvary John James Hospital is the ACT's largest private hospital, servicing a regional population of 518,000. Located in the quiet suburb of Deakin, CJJH and LPMH are situated on adjacent blocks. Both hospitals are low level constructions, and with the majority of wards being located on one level, are easily accessible for those with mobility difficulties. The CJJH site covers four hectares of land, integrating extensive gardens which provide a sanctuary for patients and visitors alike. The hospital admits over 17,000 patients per year, and maintains a unique position in that it is completely self-sufficient, with its own maintenance, laundry, catering, CSSD, landscaping and cleaning services.
