SALARY SACRIFICE
“Salary sacrifice” or “salary packaging”: is a system whereby a
portion of an employee’s gross salary or wages are substituted or
‘sacrificed’ and paid as a benefit, before tax, rather than directly
as salary, thereby reducing the amount of tax paid by the employee
on their income.
All employees of the Calvary John James Hospital are eligible to access
salary sacrifice arrangements. These benefits are offered at no cost
to the employee or offset by the hospital, and it remains the
responsibility of employees to ensure that they take appropriate
advice on salary packaging independent of the employer.

ROSTERS
We endeavour to meet the needs of staff, and all wards and clinical
departments aim for fair and equitable rostering. Flexibility is
available with short shifts, job sharing, full-time, part-time or
casual work.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
We are committed to fostering a culture
of learning within the organisation, and strongly encourage ongoing
education.
Clinical Education
Clinical education is provided to nurses in all areas either through
individual tuition or team teaching. Formal education programs
are available in house and a generous seminar and conference support
package is available.
CJJH is a Teaching Hospital
CJJH is affiliated with the University of Sydney as a teaching
hospital. In nursing, students are welcomed from The University
of Canberra, Canberra Institute of Technology and Charles Sturt
University, Australian Catholic University and University of Wollongong. Our staff take an active role is preparing our future
nurses.
New Graduate Program
In 2001 a New Graduate Program (NGP) was developed
for newly registered nurses at CJJH, replacing the previously ad
hoc informal program. The NGP, designed to ease the transition
of the new graduate from the university setting to clinical practice,
commenced in August 2001, with the aims of:
- Providing a transition program on the basis of a twelve-month
full-time equivalent or part-time equivalent, employment contract
- Sustaining a safe senior/junior skill mix, providing a protected
transition into the work force for New Graduate Nurses and maximum
safety for customers
- Providing adequate and practical clinical support to the New
Graduate Registered Nurse so that he/she will develop enough self-confidence
to be a competent practitioner
- Supporting the New Graduate Nurse in the realisation of career
goals, and promotion of safe clinical practice
- Providing a safe working environment for newly registered nurses
to consolidate undergraduate education and professional behaviours.
Competency Based Training
All staff are provided with the opportunity to undertake competency
based training with local training providers. The hospital's Certificate
IV program is the first formal middle management program that is
competency based within the Australian Qualification Training Framework
in the ACT.
The hospital, in partnership with three Canberra-based
Recognised Training Organisations (RTOs), provides access to fourteen
different nationally recognised qualifications:

We offer training for specialised units (Statement of Attainment)
on an as-needs basis, including:

We are in the process of finalising Certificate III level training
tailored to our needs in the Food Services area. This qualification
(Certificate III Health Support Services HLT31002) will incorporate
a major focus on food safety standards, together with units relating
to workplace training and frontline supervision.

- for their support and assistance.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
A comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety program helps to
keep our staff healthy. OH&S activities over the past two
years has significantly reduced workplace injuries, and the hospital
has been recognised for this by being awarded a Health Industry
Commendation Certificate. Free vaccinations are available to
all staff.
Our Employee Assistance Program recognises the value of our staff
to the success of CJJH. Staff have access to medical care,
health assessment and professional counselling and support at no
charge. Staff using any aspect of the program are assured of
confidentiality.
